Blas Infante was very much inspired by Al-Andalus — the period of cultural bloom when Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived together in southern Spain. He saw Andalusia's authentic essence derive from this multi-ethnic heritage, to the extent of incorporating Arabic calligraphy into the flag of Andalusia.
Casares sits quietly on the Andalusian hillside whitewashed houses clinging to the slope like they belong there like they’ve always been there. The streets twist and climb with no particular order leading to plazas where old men sit on benches and watch the sun cross the sky. It’s peaceful here but not empty. There’s a history that lingers not loudly but in the background like a hum.
This is where Blas Infante was born in 1885. The Father of Andalusia as he’s called though you won’t find any grand statues in the square—just his preserved house on Calle Carrera now a museum filled with papers and artefacts that map out his fight for Andalusian identity and autonomy. It’s simple understated but significant. His legacy is woven into the village’s identity just like the narrow streets and the distant shimmer of the Mediterranean.
But Casares is not a relic. It’s alive. Every August the Feria de Casares turns the quiet into colour music laughter. Locals and visitors pour into the streets for days of food dancing and parades. It’s tradition yes but it feels fresh every year. Then there’s the Feria Gastronómica y Cultural de DegustaCasares every April where food isn’t just eaten it’s celebrated. Olive oil tastings wine samplings platters of jamón ibérico. It’s small scale but honest. It’s Andalusia on a plate.
And in February there’s Día de Andalucía. Parades music and a quiet pride in a region that has always fought for its own voice. It’s the kind of event that makes you feel part of something bigger even if you’re new here.
Walking Through Time and Nature
You can’t talk about Casares without mentioning the views. Climb up to the ruins of the Arab Castle and it’s all there—the red rooftops the green rolling hills the Mediterranean glittering far off. And if you keep going past the castle past the last of the stone houses you’ll reach the Sierra Crestellina Natural Park. It’s wild and quiet home to mountain goats and soaring vultures. It’s perfect for long walks that turn into accidental hikes. Then there’s the Hedionda Roman Baths. They’re just outside the village half-hidden by trees. The sulfuric waters bubble up naturally and legend says that Julius Caesar himself bathed here once to cure a skin condition. True or not the baths are still here still used still part of the fabric of this place.

Sierra Crestellina is famous among ornithologists for being a prime nesting site for griffon vultures, Bonelli’s eagles, and peregrine falcons. It's one of the only spots in southern Spain where you can see several species of raptors flying together, frequently just above.
Living in Casares More Than Just a Home
People move here for a reason. It’s not just the views or the food or the history—it’s the pace. It’s slower here in a way that feels intentional. But that doesn’t mean isolation. Marbella is just a 30-minute drive away. Málaga Airport is about an hour. You’re close to everything but when you come home it feels like you’re worlds away.
The property market here is quietly strong. It’s not Marbella’s flashiness or Málaga’s buzz but that’s the point. In Casares you find restored townhouses with rooftop terraces views stretching to the sea. Or sleek modern villas on the outskirts where olive groves meet infinity pools. There are options. And they hold their value.
Investors have noticed. The Costa del Sol saw a 20% growth in luxury real estate in 2024. Casares sits on the edge of that boom benefitting from proximity without the crowds. It’s the sweet spot—privacy and profit potential.
